Review: Little Giant Ladder

little giant ladder Little Giant Ladder is Excellent Product - But Pricey

By Charlotte Kuchinsky

The men in my life, which include a husband, a son, and a son-in-law, all love the Little Giant Ladder. However, I have to say that I don't quite get it. Perhaps it is just a "guy thing" that I just can't quite wrap my brain around. But spending $350 or more for a ladder - which is how much this ladder cost when it came on the market - blows my mind.

The manufacturer claims that the Little Giant is "the world’s finest ladder." I don't know about that, but I do know that my men certainly swear by it. They aren't alone either, with millions of ladders having already been sold throughout the world. It's impossible to argue with statistics like that.

What is The Little Giant Ladder?
The Little Giant Ladder is a multi-use ladder than can transform into many different types of ladders, which include but certainly is not limited to a standard step, A-frame, staircase, extension, and more. The manufacturer claims it can be used 24 different ways. I can't state that as fact since I've used it myself only several ways. However, my son-in-law does seem to find a lot of uses for his.

The ladder adjusts to different heights, sizes, and styles that can be used just about anywhere you can imagine, including those difficult uneven surfaces where other ladders would fail.

Is the Little Giant Safe?
The manufacturer claims that this is the safest ladder on the market today. It is a sturdy ladder, to be certain. It is made of 6005-T5 aluminum, which is used in aircraft construction. It will easily hold a large individual, even one that weighs more than 300 pounds. Yet, it is lightweight enough that even petite women like my daughter can move it without difficulty.

There is certainly no denying that Little Giant's locking mechanisms are secure. Once the triple-lock hinges are locked into place, they don't move until you are ready to adjust them again. I have no issues with either of those important safety features. However, I find the ladder steps, which are obviously designed to be used at various angles and positions, a bit difficult to navigate. Men, on the other hand, tend to have very little problem maneuvering them.

Additionally, Little Giant complies with or exceeds both OSHA and ANSI standards. It also complies with UL code.

How Much Does the Little Giant Cost?
At the time of this writing, the Little Giant Ladder is retailing for about $360 (as always, prices are subject to change). I personally wouldn't pay that for this product for myself. However, as a gift for one of the special men in my life, I would at least have to give it some thought. My son-in-law loves his and believes it is worth every penny. In the long run, that's all that really counts. Plus, you have to love any product that is willing to give you a lifetime warranty.

Where Can I Buy the Little Giant?
The ladder can be purchased through numerous Web sites, including the official site, and it is also occasionally available on television through Home Shopping Network or QVC.

Verdict
My assessment of this product is mixed. I love that it replaces multiple ladders so that you only have to store one instead several. I love its sturdiness and overall construction. I believe that is very sturdy and, for the most part, safe. However, I do think the steps create a problem with women who don't usually wear heavy work boots. They are uncomfortable to say the least and make the footing unsteady. I also don't think the price tag is reasonable. It's a great ladder, to be sure, but I'm not convinced that it is worth more than $350. The price may well come down, and if it does, then my final rating will go up. But for now, this product gets 6 out of 10 stars.
