Review: Gutter Flusher

gutter flusher review The Gutter Flusher Can Be a Blast ... Just Not Enough of One
The Gutter Flusher is an attachment for your garden hose, a long, extendable arm whose end fishhooks, and on whose end is a small adjustable nozzle that shoots out a stream of water.

The idea behind the Gutter Flusher is that folks whose homes have rain gutters can clean out those gutters without having to use a ladder. Rather than climbing up and scooping out leaves and other debris from the rain gutters, a homeowner with the Gutter Flusher can stand on the ground while directing a powerful stream of water into the gutter, blasting that debris away.

The Gutter Flusher is easy to put together, but definitely has a cheap feel to it. You'll know as you put it together that top-of-the-line materials and highest craftsmanship were not put into its production (of course, had they been the Gutter Flusher would cost a lot more than it does).

But that's not always a sign of a poor product. If it works, who cares how cheap it looks?

The Gutter Flusher worked well on a basic level. It attaches easily to the garden hose, and the on/off switch at the base of the Gutter Flusher does control the water flow. It's easy to adjust the extendable arm. It does reach up and into the rain gutters. And the Gutter Flusher doesn't leak at its joints or spray water out its base.

But first-time users are likely to get drenched (we, ahem, speak from experience) as they try to figure out the best direction to point the nozzle. The issue is that the water doesn't come out the bottom of the nozzle, it comes out the side. Now it makes perfect sense to us - with a sideways spray, you direct the stream of water so that it pushes debris along, cleaning a path behind the spray. But on our first attempt, we pointed the nozzle rearward and directed a jet of water straight back in our face!

Kind of fun, actually, but not what the Gutter Flusher was intended to do. It was intended to clean rain gutters. The Gutter Flusher is hit and miss on that count. If the rain gutters have just a few loose leaves, the Gutter Flusher easily blasts them away.

But the Gutter Flusher can't handle a heavy-duty job. Our gutters were packed with leaves and dirt, and leaves and dirt were still there after using the Gutter Flusher.

A UPN television affiliate, WANE-TV in Fort Wayne, Ind., tested the Gutter Flusher, and their results were similar to ours. Quoting their review: "The Gutter Flusher is moving the leaves ... but, not nearly as easily as the makers would have you believe. It takes about 15 minutes to blast the leaves about 15 feet ... and, I get a shower in the process. Then I hit a dead end ... the leaves will move no further. And, instead of losing its leaves, the gutter has become filled with water. And, I have to resort to cleaning out the gutter the old-fashioned way."

The Gutter Flusher packaging also promotes the product as a high-pressure washer for automotive or home use. And it worked fine for those purposes. We just found that our regular garden hose nozzle worked every bit as well for the same chores.

The Gutter Flush has its moments, just not enough of them.
