Coffee Creations with
the Coffee Magic
(Note: Be sure to read all the way to the bottom for an important update on the Coffee Magic.)
Coffee Magic is a battery-powered coffee mug. Sound odd? Not really. A small wire whisk in the bottom of the mug froths milk to let you create fancy coffee drinks.
The Coffee Magic packaging touts the mug as "the quickest, easiest way to turn coffee into a gourmet treat!" The recipes in the instruction booklet include cappuccino, latte and mocha, along with whiskey coffee, frothy chocolate or strawberry milk and orange cream delight, among others.
The mug itself comes in three pieces: a plastic base that contains the battery compartment and wire whisk; an acrylic mug with handle that twists onto the base; and a "travel lid" so the Coffee Magic mug can be taken on the road.
The process is straightforward: add a little milk to the bottom of the mug; push the button to start the whisking; and watch the milk froth up. Then add your favorite flavorings or sweeteners and coffee.
For instant coffee, all ingredients can be added to the mug and the whisk activated to mix it all together.
We think the Coffee Magic is a pretty cool little contraption. There are a couple issues to point out, however.
First, users should always be very careful when using the Coffee Magic not to go crazy with the battery-operated whisker. Follow the instructions carefully to make sure no hot liquids splash out of the Coffee Magic mug.
And second, we admit to being a little concerned about carrying hot liquids around our home and office in a mug whose bottom twists on. To attach the acrylic mug to the base, one need only twist about a half-turn. Sure, it feels secure, but it's still worrisome. We wonder if with repeated use over time the bottom might be easier to knock lose, sending coffee flying.
We don't know if that's ever happened, but the thought did occur to us.
So we say the Coffee Magic is a neat gadget that works well, but we urge anyone buying it to make sure they carefully follow the instructions and safety precautions.
Also, note that the Coffee Magic cannot be used in the microwave, and the base is not dishwasher-safe.
Update: Upon further use, we found that milk began seeping through the base of the Coffee Magic and entering the battery compartment. Not good! We no longer feel comfortable recommending (even half-heartedly) this product.
