Space Bags

 
What it is: Space Bags are plastic bags into which items are inserted. A household vacuum cleaner, using its hose attachments, is attached to bag and used to remove all the air. If the item inside is fluffy - say, a pillow - it should shrink up into a smaller size and be easier to store. The manufacturer claims Space Bags can shrink storage space needed by as much as 75-percent.

• Shelley Daniels: "The bags worked very well for storing my outdoor pillows over the winter. However, I did have problems with 3 of the 7 bags in my set. The zipper that is used to seal the bags doesn't work very well and in two cases, tore holes in the bag itself. I was able to put tape over the small tears in one of the bags and make it useful. The other two bags are ruined. Less pressure would not seal the bags, more pressure tore them. The bags worked well for puffy items like pillows. When I used one for a sleeping bag, it didn't compress the size very much, although I'm still happy about storing it in my attic sealed in the bag, safe from bugs, mice and moisture. If the zipper mechanism worked better, I would give these a higher rating. When nearly half of the bags would not seal without enough pressure to tear the material, I have great concerns about recommending them. I'm also wondering about how many repeat uses I will be able to get without tearing the remaining bags."
