Review: Smart Stitch

smart stitch review Smart Stitch Gets "Incomplete"
The Smart Stitch is a "handheld sewing machine" that is marketed as "the handy solution to your garments and household fabric accessories."

Which, when you break the sentence down, doesn't really make sense. But we're not here to diagram sentences, we're here to tell you what we think of the Smart Stitch.

What we think is that we'd be better able to tell you if we'd actually been able to use the thing. Fact is, the thread snapped both times we attempted to put the Smart Stitch to use. We gave up, and the Smart Stitch now sits in a closet, awaiting our next yard sale.

But we do have some insights about the Smart Stitch to pass along from acquaintances who've used it. That in a second, but now a few of our own observations.

The Smart Stitch runs on four "AA" batteries (not included) or an AC adapter (not included). It really does fit comfortably in the user's hand, and it really is very maneuverable. An owner would be able to make quick repairs to items, such as curtains, that would be a hassle to handle with a normal sewing machine.

The unit comes with a safety switch which should alway be set in place when the Smart Stitch is not in use. It also comes with an extra spindle, a needle threader and three bobbins of thread in addition to the one that is already in place on the unit.

Now, for what we've heard from those who have used the Smart Stitch. We've been told that the Smart Stitch is great for mending curtains, tableclothes and things of that sort. Fabrics used in ways that don't put any pressure on the stitches.

We've also been told that the Smart Stitch leaves a lot to be desired for items such as clothing. Fabrics used in ways that do put a lot of pressure on the stitches, or thicker fabrics.

Because the stitches, according to our correspondents, are easy to pull out.

So if you find the Smart Stitch for a cheap price and want something handy for mending certain types of fabric, go for it. But if you are thinking the Smart Stitch could be used for heavy duty jobs, or for sturdy, longterm fixes, think again.
