What it is: The iRobot Roomba Discovery Floorvac, a k a the Roomba Robotic Vacuum, comes in many different varieties, but all are designed to do the same thing: vacuum a room on their own, while you are doing something else.

• Toby, Amarillo, Texas: "The Roomba works really well on hardwood floors, linoleum, etc. It doesn't work as well on carpet, and the thicker the carpet, the less well it works. The Roomba doesn't move around very well on carpeting, it's much slower, and the battery wears down faster. Sort of a mixed bag. If you want it to clean uncarpeted floors, it does a great job replacing a broom. If you want it to clean carpeting, it's not a great replacement for a regular vacuum cleaner."
